Become an environmental film director and win some bucks!

We all know what plastic is! We’re paddlers. It’s our boats, our paddles, out water bottles, but wait, it’s so much more.

Get Your Gages

The USGS has a system of gages that allow you to see the flow rates of water bodies, rivers, creeks, lake levels,.

With Google Earth you are able to zoom right into to a location once you know the coordinates. Combining these two tools, we can see right where a USGS gage is located and see if it will provide information to help you plan a trip. The gages will possibly be run in cooperation with one of more agencies to fund it. Those named agencies may have a hand in flows on the water in question so they too are a point of contact for additional information.

http://waterwatch.usgs.gov/index.php?id=real&sid=w__kml

However, you can use the link above to add to your Google Earth data base and see where USGS gages are located. These may not be the ONLY gages serving an area, but for me, they are the first place to look.

Dallas Tour of Homes that landscape with less – WATER

May 30, 2013                                                                                     noel.nielson@dallascityhall.com

Water-Wise Landscape Tour showcases beautiful landscapes that use less water

Dallas – Water-wise landscaping focuses on the use of plants that are native to North Texas or adapted to our climate. These plants naturally thrive in our summer heat with little supplemental watering. 2013 marks the 19th year of the popular Water-Wise Landscape Tour which will feature 19 landscapes throughout the Dallas area on Saturday, June 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

“More than 50 percent of the city’s drinking water can be used on lawns and landscaping during the hot summer season. To help reduce outdoor use, City of Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) wants to show residents that beautiful landscaping and water conservation can go hand-in-hand,” said Carole Davis, DWU Conservation Division Manager. “The Water-Wise Landscape Tour demonstrates that residents can ‘go green by saving blue,’ and keep their yards looking great while saving water, energy, time and money.”

The annual Water-Wise Landscape Tour is a free, self-guided tour showcasing the best of the best North Texas Water-Wise landscapes. Guests can choose their own route and visit as many landscapes as they like. Tour maps can be downloaded at SaveDallasWater.com or picked up at one of the three tour headquarters:

Central Headquarters: Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther Drive, Dallas, 75218

North Headquarters: Les Lacs Linear Park, 3901 Beltway Drive, Addison, 75001

South Headquarters: Lake Cliff Park, E. Colorado Blvd. & N. Zang Blvd., Dallas 75203

Each of the tour headquarters will serve as the site of “MicroTalks” where attendees can learn how to apply water-wise techniques to their own landscapes. The free 30-minute “MicroTalks” will be taught every hour on the hour by the Dallas County Master Gardeners.

The Water-Wise Landscape Tour is hosted by Dallas Water Utilities, City of Dallas Storm Water Management, City of Dallas Park and Recreation, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, the Dallas County Master Gardeners and the Town of Addison.

The first 100 visitors at each of the three headquarters will receive a free hose nozzle. Additional information, including a map of the tour locations can be found at SaveDallasWater.com or by calling the Water Conservation Hotline at (214) 670-3155.

700 + River Gauges getting hit with funding issues

http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/flood-risk-budget-cuts-close-s/12263381

As water users we are very dependent on a reliable way to know where the water is flowing. USGS gauges have for years been the go to for many of the nations paddlers.

If you can, you should see what is in the cross hairs of defunding and help those with power know which ones are important to you.

On a recent paddle out around Goat Island and the C paddle trail, the plant has grown so much that a solid blanket of it covers the trail. This makes for difficult paddling. please check out these sites and learn about why we need to move against this problem soon. Tell Mark Zuckerberg that Tar Sands are NOT cool!

http://thinkprogress.org/immigration/2013/04/26/1925921/mark-zuckerbergs-new-political-group-spending-big-on-ads-supporting-keystone-xl-and-oil-drilling/

With the environment being attacked on many fronts, it is key to pick and chose where you hang your hat. What do you support and what do you not?

I urge you to take a stand against this destructive energy flow. Tell the President, your congressmen and women, your senators, and Mark that you oppose this idea.
